Class Introduction
:This class is designed for aspiring beginner and intermediate level chess players. The course will focus on piece movement, basic principals of attack and defense, common tactical patterns, common openings and simple endgame patterns.
The first two classes will focus on chess rules and piece movement, and is recommended for students who do not have prior experience with chess. The remaining classes are for students with some prior exposure to chess, and would like to expand their knowledge of chess, get better at the game, and start to play competitively either online or at a local over-the-board tournament.
We will mainly use material and exercises from the book “Chess Steps Book 1”, along with additional materials from other sources, depending on the progress of the class.
Constant practice is a must for improvement in chess. Students will be issued exercises for homework, and are expected to complete them on their own between classes. We will go over answers for them during class. We will also hold a mini-tournament at the end of class if time permits.
Disclaimer: Students who already have a USCF rating above 400 (chess.com equivalent of above 600) will likely find the material too easy for their level.
